Where is Alexandria?
Incorporated in 1779, Alexandria, VA is located on the west bank of the Potomac River and just six miles south of Washington DC. An estimated 130,000 residents live in this city which is geographically quite small at only 15.4 square miles. While Alexandria is rich in US history and diverse in its population base, today’s issues of construction, development and ongoing infrastructure maintenance brings asset management to the forefront.
As a sub-contractor to Richmond, Virginia-based Timmons Group, Dig-Smart, LLC recently took the City of Alexandria Virginia’s Transportation & Environmental Services Department recently live with their new Dig-Smart Enterprise / Cityworks MMS solution for Virginia Underground Protection Services (VUPS). Dig-Smart Enterprise now allows each VUPS ticket to map the actual excavation site using coordinate data stored as XML on electronic VUPS tickets. Dig-Smart’s industry-leading mapping environment is anchored by ArcGIS, which allows Alexandria to visualize each excavation site directly in the Enterprise Geodatabase. When either the software or end-user determines that a field locate should be performed on ticket, Dig-Smart (through the NAGCS framework) generates a Cityworks work order. The data is passed from one database to the other with the click of one button. All pertinent information related to the dig site is transferred directly into the Cityworks work order allowing locators to access, visualize and see necessary data.
When the work order is closed by a locator, the data is again, automatically transferred between the Cityworks database and the Dig-Smart database with the click of one button. This allows for the data captured by the field locator to be entered into the VUPS positive response system. Dig-Smart Enterprise automatically connects to the VUPS center using TCP/IP and the standard codes(i.e. 10, 30, 33, etc) can be directly entered into the Dig-Smart positive response console.
This new, streamlined and analytical environment for the management of VUPS tickets ensures that all records will be digitally stored and managed through Dig-Smart and Cityworks and ultimately, improve the efficiency of the locators responsible for the City’s traffic and sewer underground infrastructure.
