Dig-Smart technology is aimed at utility companies who manage and account for one-
call ticket management. Tickets are electronic records or work order requests generated by anyone using machine operated equipment to excavate a site. This would include operators of heavy industry equipment such as bulldozers and wheel saws but would also include lightweight equipment rentals from home improvement centers such as augers and jack hammers.

As each project begins, the person or company performing the excavating must call the state, provincial or regional one-call center governing that area. This may be something as simple as calling 8-1-1 or visiting a website and completing a web form. Once the data is captured by the one-call center, a ticket is generated and distributed to all utility operators in possession of underground infrastructure. This includes both public and private utilities alike.

Once the ticket is received by the utility owner, Dig-Smart technology can take that electronic record and bring the information directly into a geographic information system. At this point the ticket is visualized and mapped on a computer allowing the utility owners to quickly make decisions on which sites require staking or marking and which ones are all clear.
